The three largest unions in the forest industry in British Columbia, Unifor, the United Steelworkers and the Canadian Federation of Public and Private Workers, jointly released a report.
The report documents a dramatic decline in the forest industry in British Columbia, where the province's share of wood products in Canada's total production has fallen from half to one-third due to permanent plant closures or long-term downsizing.
In the last decade alone, more than 10,000 directly or indirectly related jobs have been lost, including 3,000 industry-wide related jobs in 2023.
In the past 14 months alone, 13 mills in British Columbia have closed or permanently reduced production, including the permanent closure of Catalyst Paper Mill in Crofton and Western Forest Products' Port Alberni sawmill.
Canada is a country rich in natural resources, especially timber resources. Its vast forest area and diverse climatic conditions provide unique conditions for the growth of various kinds of wood. Among them, birch is a light and soft wood with good elasticity and toughness. Its texture is delicate and clear, usually showing a pale white or pale yellow tone. Birch is easy to process and dye, so it has a wide range of applications in furniture, siding, doors and window frames. At the same time, birch is often used to make crafts and fine wood crafts.
In general, Canada's timber industry is an important part of its natural resources. These woods not only have beautiful appearance and excellent physical properties, but also have important significance in terms of environmental protection and sustainable development. Through proper development and utilization, Canada's wood industry will continue to provide high quality wood products to consumers around the world.
